Michael Stever is a Los Angeles-based performer, writer, and producer. He has performed with Harry Belafonte, Al Jarreau, Carmen Bradford, Jamie Davis, Dave Brubeck, Nancy Wilson, Bobby McFerrin, Ramsey Lewis, Steve Miller, Alan Hewitt, Marion Meadows, Nick Colionne, Eric Darius, and Brian Culbertson. Michael has also written for Ramsey Lewis, Steve Miller and Brian Culbertson.
Elizabeth Geyer is a trumpeter and composer from Sydney, Australia. At 13, Elizabeth's music teacher put her on trumpet to make up numbers. "It wasn't my favorite instrument but I found it a challenge so I stuck at it", she said. By 2005, she was an accomplished jazz trumpeter/flugel horn player, pianist and vocalist. She's worked with Don Burrows and James Morrison. Her debut album featured the standard repertoire. On the next CD, Elizabeth poured all of her musical energy and passion into song writing, which led to The Dream. Talking Smooth Jazz welcomes trumpeter Lin Rountree to talk about his new cd, Soul Tree.
He received his first trumpet as a gift from his uncle at the age of 10 and quickly rose to notoriety as the youngest member of the Brass Institute under the tutelage of Major Edouard Wade. Adding drums and percussion to his skills, Charles went on the road with his father, also a professional musician. Eventually enrolling on a scholarship at the Florida State University, coming under the influence of the distinguished pianist and teacher Marcus Roberts, he graduated as the College of Music Brautlecht Scholar with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. In 2005, he placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition in Bangkok, Thailand and performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Netherlands. In 2006 he placed 1st in the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, Virginia. In 2006, he released his debut album Culture Shock to outstanding reviews from around the country. And in 2009, he released his second album Folklore. He recently performed as trumpeter for the 2009 Soul Train Awards house band, he played with notable artists, such as Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson, Bootsy Collins, Brian McKnight, Chrisette Michelle, Boyz II Men. Trumpeteer Joey Sommerville’s musical essence lies in the Baptist church. "When I was a teenager, I would judge the caliber of my playing by the number of people in the congregation who got happy. If you arent touching the listeners soul, then you arent really playing music. Soul communication is the key." Interview with trumpeter extraordinaire
We open with an archived interview with Wadada Leo Smith speaking on his project, 10 Freedom Summers which premiered in LA last month. The world premiere of the trumpeter/composers civil rights opus features the his Golden Quartet and Southwest Chamber Music. The musicians recorded the project in the days after the premiere for release on Cuneiform in the spring of 2012. The visionary trumpeter and composer delivers his masterwork, a vivid, spiritually charged musical tapestry that celebrates the movements heroes and the turbulent eras milestones, while also posing philosophical questions about the nature of democracy and equality. Mishy Lesser, Ed.D. Learning Director and the director, Adam Mazo, Coexist, join us to talk about their film project, Coexist, screening at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, Friday, November 18. 8pm. Tickets are $10 at La Peña Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley. Coexistis a new forty-minute documentary by director Adam Mazo about post-genocide Rwanda where a social experiment in forced reconciliation is currently underway. By featuring victims, perpetrators, and supporters of genocide, as well as social commentators, government officials, and a U.S. scholar of Rwanda, the film lays bare the complexities of forgiveness and reconciliation. Viewers will meet Rwandan victims who choose to forgive and others who do not, and can decide for themselves if perpetrators are sincerely remorseful and whether they believe coexistence is possible for all Rwandans. We close with an interview with Alrick Brown, director, Kinyarwanda. We also feature a short interview with a member of: OCCUPY LA, opening music is by Wadada Leo Smith.

Trumpeter Edmund Sobczak is known as EDolutionary (stage name) which is a mixture of his name and the evolutionary style of music he creates. Edmund’s musical taste is influenced by artists like Michele Camilo, Arturo Sandoval, Miles Davis, Winton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Dave Koz and many, many others from all kinds of genres, including classical and pop but his number one inspiration for the modern style and tone was Chris Botti.
